Being offered the opportunity to run your own department is what almost all of us are waiting for. Of course, who wouldn’t want to get promoted to a higher ranking position within the company? But while it seems like the best thing in the world to become the boss, you would need to prepare yourself for some tough challenges ahead. As the new boss, you will be facing problems that you have had to endure for years. Also, you and your colleagues know each other so well, in terms of your strengths and weaknesses, so it is natural for them to have expectations. The problem is that these expectations could be unrealistic already, and this is normally a cause of pressure at work.

Thus, as a potential boss, you need to know what is expected of you at your new post, and whether or not you are equipped with what you need to do your work right.   • Acknowledge the fact that this transition is an adjustment not only for you, but for everyone else in the department as they will have to get used to all the new rules and their new roles in the company. If you can, try to outline the things they can expect from you as their manager. You should also explain to them what you expect from them.
  • Let everyone know your vision for the department while also making them understand what particular goals you should reach according to the demands of the higher office.
  • Stay committed to not having favoritism. Of course there will be people in your staff that you are closer with, but this should not be used as your basis when you start assigning tasks and responsibilities.
